12 Days until Östersund: Stars Lead the Way for Norway
Copyright IBU/Christian Manzoni
12 days until the opening of the 2016-17 BMW IBU World Cup season in Östersund and the Norwegian team is counting on the four big stars on the men's squad and their Golden Girl to make this another successful year. Last season, the Norwegian ended their season in a familiar position, at the top of the Nations Cup, winning for the third year in a row and for the fourth time in the past seven years. At the same time, they captured the Men's Relay Cup and were a part of the Mixed Relay Cup. Their success last year and their prospects this year rests squarely on the shoulders of four men: Johannes Thingnes Boe, his brother Tarjei, Emil Hegle Svendsen and the seemingly ageless Ole Einar Bjorndalen. This season they are being guided by two new coaches, Egil Kristiansen and the former French coach Siegfried Mazet. At the same time, the women's hopes all revolve around their IBU World Champion Tiril Eckhoff, their best athlete since Tora Berger retired. She and teammates Fanny Birkeland, Synnøve Solemdal and Marte Olsbu captured the WCH relay title, but even with this accomplishment, the others remain far behind the Golden Girl as the new season approaches.

17 Days until Östersund: Gabi and the Czech Team
Copyright IBU/Evgeny Tumashov
The Östersund Countdown rolls on. Last season the Czech Republic team had unprecedented success as Gabriela Koukalová won the World Cup Total Score plus three of the other four small crystal globes. Yet, at the same time there was disappointment when the men dropped from 5th to 8th in the Nations Cup both Ondrej Moravec and Michal Slesingr fell out of the top 10 men in the Total Score. The team also completely missed the podium at the IBU WCH in Oslo. After several years of getting better and regularly winning medals; this was big comedown. The challenge for the Czech team is simple but hard: Moravec, Slesingr and Co need to get back to their 2014-15 level while Koukalová must fend off everyone who wants to take the big Crystal Globe this season. Of course, they also need some podiums at Nove Mesto na Morave in December plus a few WCH medals in Hochfilzen for good measure.

19 Days until Östersund: Ukraine Preview

19 days and counting until more than 20 mixed relay teams fly out of the Östersund Ski Stadium in search of the first victory of the new season. Ukraine is one of the teams that could be battling for the podium in that first competition. They finished fourth at the IBU WCH, just over 15 seconds from a medal and would be very happy to get on the podium in the first competition of the season. The Ukrainian women were better than the men finishing fifth in the Nations Cup, just 19 points behind Italy, while the men finished seventh. Olena Pidhrushna, Juliya Dzhyma and Sergey Semenov led the team and will probably do the same this season. They will be missing the Semerenko sisters, but have a strong lineup of upcoming stars who will keep the team among the World Cup elite again this year.

Siegfried Mazet: Comfortable, Happy in Norwegian Team
Copyright IBU/ Biathlonworld
Siegfried Mazet is at home after just completing a training camp with his Norwegian team in France. His time at home is short, because he heads north to Norway for on-snow training soon. The 39-year-old reflected on his first camp as a Norwegian coach in France, the last week at Correncon-en-Vercors, the home stadium of Martin Fourcade and Marie Dorin Habert. “It was different; because I had a new group of guys in front of me in a place where I had been many times with the French team…it was fun. I think the team enjoyed it; Johannes said he had never trained on such a hard course.”
